PEONIES ON THE COUNTER
July/August, 2025
Case Edgerton Studios is pleased to present new work for the board by Minneapolis-based painter Tim Tozer. Peonies on the Counter is part of an ongoing series of paintings that 'explore the smaller corners of reality' surrounding the artist everyday.
"I have seen these arrangements of architecture and nature over many summers, constant and constantly changing, from moment to moment as well as year to year. The scale of these works usually reflect the intimacy of the encounters, small enough to hold in the hand or carry under your arm. Even so, I hope the relationships of form and space I paint are dynamic enough to sustain the larger-than-life scale of the Board. The painting I made for this project is my attempt to put this to the test; ‘Peonies on the Counter’ is 24” x 24” – the distance from my elbow to the tip of my middle finger – or my wrist to the end of a paintbrush.
I am driven by the visual, non-verbal language of painting; the surface, the mark, the color, and the configuration of these into compositions that rise to meet the world while creating their own, independent reality. But my paintings also aspire to mediate sensations that involve the whole body, not just the eyes – sensations of weight, heat, smell, etc. Their translation into the visual medium of paint is performative, and while the smaller works invite interaction, I want the larger image to demand it, just as the moments I paint demand a vivid reaction from me. I appreciate this opportunity to see my own work anew and share it with the surrounding community. "
